Spotlight: Benefits of Volunteering

Sometimes, just having a safe place to have fun without any prejudice can make an individual’s life so much more fulfilling. That’s why Mencap provide such a place – on Monday and Wednesday nights, Waverley Café (about 5 minutes from Huddersfield train station) opens its doors to people with special needs for them to make friends while having fun. They sew, bake, play pool, and even go on trips out, all while in a safe and supportive environment. It might not sound like much, but to the individuals at Monday and Wednesday club it’s one of the highlights of their week.

For me as a volunteer, helping out at the Monday Club gives me an insight into learning disabilities that I couldn’t get anywhere else. I’m learning about mental health and learning disabilities in the community – something you can’t get in a lecture theatre. I’m making great new friends, and giving a small something back to my local community.
